Uni pledges to hit energy targets with biomass
The University of York has said it will use a biomass boiler to help it meet renewable energy commitments.
It has pledged to provide at least ten per cent of its new Heslington East campus' energy needs through renewable sources.
The strategy will see a biomass boiler located on the site which will generate hot water, using woodchip from local sustainable sources.
This will supplement the water currently provided by the educational institution's central energy centre and meet ten per cent of renewable energy requirements.
Elizabeth Heaps, pro-vice-chancellor for estates and strategic projects at York, said: "Renewable energy is an important part of our strategy but efficient use of energy in the university as a whole is critically important.
"All buildings on Heslington East will meet rigorous design standards, delivering high energy efficiency and low energy use."
Research from the University of York released this week shows that plants will adapt to cope with climate change but this won't have a positive affect on global warming.
